What is mobile hotspot?

Also known as tethering, mobile hotspot lets you share your phone's data connection with other devices when regular Wi-Fi is not available.

Mobile hotspot, sometimes called tethering, lets your phone share its cellular data connection as a Wi-Fi network for other devices nearby.

Stay online away from home

Use hotspot when you are traveling, working remotely, sitting in the car, or helping another device get connected without public Wi-Fi.

◉

Connect more than your phone

Share your LokNet connection with laptops, tablets, handheld game systems, cameras, and other Wi-Fi capable devices.

⌁

Uses your plan data

Hotspot does not create a separate home internet line. It uses the mobile data included with your active LokNet wireless plan.

How does a phone hotspot work?

Your phone connects to the cellular network, then creates a short-range Wi-Fi signal that nearby devices can join. Once connected, those devices use your phone's mobile data connection to browse, work, stream, or communicate.

1
Turn on personal hotspot

Open the hotspot setting on your iPhone or Android device and create a private network name and password.

2
Connect your other device

On your laptop, tablet, or other device, choose your phone's hotspot network and enter the password.

3
Use data from your mobile plan

Your connected device uses your LokNet mobile data, so hotspot usage counts toward your plan's available data.

Types of hotspots

Hotspot can mean a few different things. Here is the simple version.

Mobile hotspot

Your phone shares its cellular data connection with nearby Wi-Fi devices. This is the hotspot feature most LokNet customers will use.

Public Wi-Fi hotspot

A shared Wi-Fi network at places like hotels, airports, coffee shops, libraries, and restaurants. These can be convenient, but they are not your private mobile line.

Portable hotspot device

A separate device built mainly to share cellular internet. It works like a small router, but requires its own compatible service setup.
